This is the worst. And for me at least, the comments usually come from people who are close to me. They don’t mean to offend me in any way, and probably don’t even realize that what they’re saying could be interpreted that way. While most of my friends aren’t particularly religious, they don’t judge or question people of more “mainstream” faiths for attending services or praying. Why should it be any different when I take part in a ritual or meditate at my altar? Just because it isn’t something they grew up being exposed to doesn’t mean that it’s some kind of weird thing that only people with a few screws loose legitimately believe in. It’s frustrating, and often I just end up feeling embarrassed and pressured into defending myself, even when the conversation strays into a subject that I haven’t fully formed an opinion on yet.
